Boiled linseed oil is excellent for finishing and maintaining Canadian pine furniture, pine floors and even log cabins. Mixing linseed oil with pure turpentine (2/3 Linseed Oil to 1/3 Turpentine) creates an oiled finish on fine furniture and wood paneling and a durable finish that does not need waxing. Linseed oil penetrates deep into the wood and creates a water and alcohol-resistant surface without altering the natural color of the wood when dry.
|
Circa 1850 raw linseed oil contains only raw linseed oil and does not contain any solvents or other additives. Linseed oil, pressed from the seed of the flax plant, has been used for centuries to protect and beautify wood. Raw linseed oil can be used as a finish, or can be mixed with other varnishes or solvents to formulate custom finishes. Circa 1850 raw linseed oil can be used on food preparation surfaces and wood bowls, but Terra Nova Naturoil is recommended for cutting boards and butcher blocks.

Xylene is a strong, colorless solvent effective for thinning specialty coatings and for cleaning tools and equipment. It has a slower drying time than toluene, so it is often used to achieve a smooth finish or to have more time to blend oil-based paints together before they dry.

Solvable professional grade boiled linseed oil is excellent for protecting concrete walks and floors, flagstone or interlocking stone from the elements and from salt and chemical damage. It also protects log cabins and wood paneling. You can use it as an oil finish for most wood types because it creates a coating that is impervious to water, heat, most stains and scratches. Staining with this product achieves a warm golden tone to pine and maple. Porous woods and walnut will darken considerably when treated.

Pure Turpentine is a natural product distilled from pine trees and is the top thinner and cleaner available for oil based paints, varnishes and oil finishes that are high in color quality, durability and easy maintenance. There are less expensive alternatives, but turpentine achieves superior paint consistency as it blends beautifully with oil-based paints, varnishes and enamels to ensure smooth, even application. Most paint thinners are petroleum distillates that evaporate quickly. This can cause filming of color in fine art painting and uneven coverage if used as a thinner for house paint. Turpentine's slow evaporation rate creates a gradual drying time and makes for an excellent thinner for special art finishes and artists' oil paints. As a brush cleaner, Turpentine is gentle on expensive natural bristles. It is also an essential ingredient in the mixture used to create an antique oiled finish on fine furniture.
